The City of Essex Junction Public Works Department is receiving applications for full-time employment as an Equipment Operator/Maintenance Technician Level 1 or Level 2. The Equipment Operator / Maintenance Technician operates a variety of equipment and assists in general highway maintenance and construction work, with a focus on the operation of basic to moderately complex trucks and equipment. The position also performs a wide range of general labor work associated with maintaining City water and sewer distribution systems, sidewalks, streets, buildings, and grounds. This position is responsible for plowing during the winter season, with the extent of plow work dependent on the position level the candidate is qualified at. The chosen candidate will be hired at the level they are most qualified for.
Qualified candidates for the entry-level position must possess a high school diploma/GED, plus 2-3 years of relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and satisfactory driving skills are also required. Experience operating heavy equipment and driving large trucks is a plus. Qualified candidates for the upper-level position must possess a high school diploma/GED, plus 3-4 years of relevant work experience as a truck driver and equipment operator, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. The starting salary range is dependent on the level and ranges from $14.21-to $17.54/hour. The actual salary will be determined by experience and qualifications, with the potential for rates as high as $20-$22 per hour.
